A Black Square
A Black Square is a family investment office based in Milan, Italy. Its primary interests lay in supporting entrepreneurs with early stage capital, co-investments in special projects (often with a social impact) and a growing portfolio of sustainability-focused real estate developments. A Black Square also manages an enviable modern art collection that includes works by Alighiero Boetti, Paolo Scheggi and Constantin Brancusi amongst (many) others.
Inspired by the founder’s love of Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 abstract painting, ‘Black Square’, we developed the naming strategy and brand identity. The identity adopts a purist approach that can be interpreted and appropriated in multiple ways. This allows it a flexibility that effortlessly resonates with the breadth of investments and audiences the business engages with.
The name, A Black Square, and the brand identity takes its inspiration from Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 abstract painting, ‘Black Square’.
All aspects of the identity — from the logo itself, to each and every branded touchpoint — are underpinned by a square-unit grid that provides the brand with uniformity and balance, but also allows for it to have some flexibility.
The website serves as a portfolio for A Black Square’s investments and charitable projects, but also acts as a catalogue for the significant family art collection to support dialogue with curators and international galleries.
